Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said that the Syrian Christian town of Maaloula is enduring just as same as the Sunni city of Homs, which reflects the intensity of war raging in the neighboring country.
In remarks published by "L'Orient Le Jour" newspaper, Geagea said he has yet to receive information about the number of victims whose lives were claimed during the recent battle that took place in the Syrian town and the damage caused.
"Battles are raging there between the regime forces from one side and the opposition from another", Geagea said.
While noting that no clear image could be articulated concerning the situation in Maaloula amid conflicting media reports, Geagea was keen on referring to the statements made by Mother Pelagia Sayah, the head of Saint Tekla monastery, and Greek Orthodox Patriarch Youhanna Yazigi who both denied any massacres taking place in the town.
"Anyway, despite the lack of confirmed information, politicians and media outlets belonging to the March 8 coalition, are declaring themselves as the protectors of Christians by denouncing the alleged massacre," he said. "If they are clinging on this rhetoric, then it's neither because they are keen on the Christians nor out of a humanitarian motive. Their rhetoric is a political investment that serves the interest of Damascus regime."
In case the Maaloula massacre was confirmed, Geagea said, the only solution then will be to protect the town and preserve its historic, religious heritage.
"If the Syrian regime really wants to protect the Christians of Syria and the region, then the only and most efficient solution will be to address an international appeal to the UN to safeguard Maaloula," the LF leader said.
Geagea concluded by saying that fear is the worst thing to impose on Middle Eastern Christians, noting that the Syrian regime has for long been the sponsor of extremists who "were nursed by the Syrian Intelligence apparatuses".
