Finally the word “congratulations” is well deserved for all the Lebanese people and especially for the couple Nidal Darwich and Khouloud Succarieh, the first to get civil marriage in Lebanon.
In fact, Minister of Interior and Municipalities, caretaker Marwan Charbel signed the civil marriage certificate of Kholoud and Nidal at the records of the directorate general of personal status after more than six months when they got married on 10/1/2012. Charbel stressed the necessity of bringing such marriage into effect, after it has previously been rejected by the directorate.
Charbel, however, pointed out: “Their religions must not be changed and the couple's marriage would follow the laws of personal affairs that their sects stipulate, because there are no texts concerning divorce, inheritance and kids for “people with no religious affiliation, awaiting issuing a code that governs optional civil marriage in the country.
Charbel took the decision after asking the opinion of a number of lawyers and legislators entitled to study this case since Nidal and Khouloud got married.
The Lebanese Supreme Council in the Ministry of Justice supported the 1936 decision to consider legal all marriages for people that do not have any religious affiliation.
Instantly, Minister of Justice Chakib Kortbawi asked Minister Charbel to continue the step and take into consideration the opinion of the committee.
President of the Republic Michel Suleiman was the first to congratulate the couple via Twitter.
