Here we go again, chosen by the people and cracking down on them.
MP Nicolas Fattouch reached the Justice Palace in Baabda at around eleven, entered the premise hard as stone inquiring where complaints are filed. Manal Daou, the ill-fated employee, answered the inquiry.
However, a predictable turns of event altered the scene from a professional workplace into a wrestling arena as the employee, who was working her wait through files, sustained a downpour of insults for not expediting the file on the spot as she was processing other files.
“Insolent! How dare you neglect my complaint? Who are you to make me wait?” Fattouch bellowed. Oblivious to his identity, Manal asked: “Who are you sir? Why are you talking to me like that?”
The bodyguard then puffed up with pride trumpeting his boss’s name: “MP Nicolas Fattouch.”
“You did not even greet me, what wrong have I done?” she replied. Fuming, the MP raised his fist and hit M. Daou on the neck. Who knows, maybe his mindset is akin to that of his quarries, fossilized and seeking to break anything and anyone.
Employees then rushed to stop the situation from escalating and to protect Manal from the MP’s assault. Thinking that he is some kind of premium citizen, MP Fattouch remained fuming as numerous attempts sought to appease him.
The rest is unacceptable, for Mr. Fattouch, the premium citizen and the official – might we recall that he was elected by the people – refused to listen to Prosecutor Claude Karam’s attempts to appease his anger until the victim was forced to apologize to the very person who assaulted her.
According to the MP, Manal had done him wrong and the proof was her apology. Manal, who has sustained a blow to the neck, could not file a complaint against the perpetrator and the reason is because of her status as an employee and her family’s need for support, which cannot be taken for granted.
“I am an employee, go figure …” she specifically stated.
The whole incident was far more than just physical assault, for instead of protecting the people, MPs seem to become delusional and power drunk to the extent of taking those who have put them in their position of power for granted. The assault could be viewed as an insult to both MPs and lawyers who seem to be bypassing laws and abusing power a go-go.
Impunity, impunity, impunity is what his country has been built on. Need proof? Direct your gaze towards the parliament and the numerous cases that are plaguing drawers with unfinished business and violations.
